A SNAP REVIEW
By Subbaram Danda
Today
we went to the noon show of Dangal in a cinema hall near our home. It was a Tamil version. We chose it because we are not very
comfortable with Hindi. The dubbing was
excellent.
Dangal,
meaning a fight, revolves around a wrestler, who narrowly misses hitting the
international scene. He vows to make his
children reach the goals he had set for himself. As he does not have male children, his four
offspring being girls, he plans to make two of them world-class wrestlers. He puts them through rigorous training, much
to their displeasure. Yet they accept
his diktats. He insists that their focus should always be on winning nothing less than a gold. He loves them very much but
does not exhibit it outwardly. Human emotions are at play throughout.
The
trials and tribulations the family undergoes have been beautifully
captured. It also brings out the drawbacks in our system
that are responsible for our poor performance in international sports events. Coaches are not spared.
The
entire film is fast-paced, though the tempo slackens somewhat a couple of times. The second
half keeps the viewers on the edge of their seats. Excitement builds up as the film nears the end. The international bouts have been realistically
shot. The last one is heart-pounding.
Aamir
Khan, a no-nonsense yet tender-hearted father, is overshadowed by his
two casual-looking yet highly-motivated daughters, who put up a scintillating performance. There is no comic track. Nor are there any 'glamorous' scenes. Tamil songs set to original tunes are uniquely enjoyable! Editing is crisp and direction neat.
If
you want to be an achiever and if you aim at the stars, this is a film you must
not miss seeing.
